CASTABLE REFRACTORIES - are essentially ready-mix concrete in high temperature formulations, designed to be poured into forms or contained areas.  Castables are available for a range of applications from very lightweight, insulating mixes to very dense, heavy formulations for use in the most severe conditions of heat or chemical attack.  Brand names include Moldit, Ricast, Cercast, Criterion, Aluguard...

PLASTIC REFRACTORIES - refers to refractories that are supplied in a moldable, damp form and are rammed or pressed into place.  Plastics allow forming into virtually any contour without the necessity of forms although proper installation technique needs to be developed to ensure success.   Plastics are also available in a variety of grades, depending on the application.  Brand names: Ramtite, Blu-Ram, 85-Ram, 90-Ram...
